Inspired by the Ministry of Youth and Civic partners, a group of street children took part in the global celebration of World Cleanup Day on September 20, 2025, by cleaning the streets of Yaoundé and calling for their own social integration.
World Cleanup Day, observed every September 20th, gathered over 50 youth mobilized by the Ministry of Civic Education to lead a city clean-up. The initiative, driven by the Consortium for Nature, Environment, and Sustainable Development (CNEDD) and the association Main de l’Espoir, saw young participants gather at Independence Square early in the morning. They cleaned the area along the main roads up to Nlongkak Roundabout, earning praise from local residents.
Some indirectly sensitizing the public with different banner saying « every gesture count for a clean city ». The day’s theme focused on encouraging street children to act for environmental protection within their communities. Beyond the clean-up, the event included educational talks where many children expressed their desire to leave street life. Government representatives outlined available support programs, including training opportunities for those willing to volunteer.
In response, the children shared a message for authorities, stating that they wish to be seen not as a problem, but as useful actors in building a prosperous society. The activity highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Youth and its partners to guide and support vulnerable youth.
