The drama began on Saturday, September 20, in the Nkomo neighborhood of Yaounde, as Sandrine Bidjang mother of 18 month old baby had left the child in the care of their nanny, as she often did.
A young nanny is in police custody after she allegedly kidnapped the 18 month old baby she was hired to protect. The police report that the 20 year old nanny planned the crime with her 25 year old boyfriend. The first sign of trouble came when the baby’s mother returned home. She described the moment she realized something was terribly wrong. “I walked into the house and the television was still playing, but the house was too quiet,” the mother said. “I called out for the nanny, but there was no answer.
I entered to the baby’s room and her cloths were scattered . I did not see anybody no nanny, and no baby Sophia. with the baby’s clothes on the floor , at that moment, I knew something bad had happened.” Immediately, the parents sprang into action. The mother contacted the police to report her daughter missing. She also started a campaign on social media, sharing a “Missing Person” alert with photos of baby Sophia. Her post was shared hundreds of times by worried friends and strangers across the city. The widespread attention helped the police with their investigation.
Just two days later, on Monday, September 23, officers located the suspects. They were arrested in the Nkolanga area of Yaounde, and most importantly, baby Sophia was found safe and unharmed. The couple have not yet revealed why the kidnapped the baby. Both suspects are now being held . 25 year old Bekobe Serge the nanny’s boyfriend and the nanny herself are in custody. The family is overjoyed to have their daughter back home safely. They have thanked the police and everyone on social media who helped share the alert, which led to the quick rescue.
