The Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, today, 6 August 2025, presided over the opening ceremony of the National Status of Student Entrepreneurs of Private and Public University Institutions in Cameroon, aimed at helping young people develop practical skills.
The Yaoundé Congress Hall opened its doors to student entrepreneurs today August 6, under the theme: The Student Entrepreneurs in Private Higher Education in Cameroon : From Incubation to Business Creation. The event aimed to help young people develop practical skills, encourage innovation, and create jobs in different sectors. The government of Cameroon has introduced a special forum to support students who want to start their own businesses while studying or after graduation. The Minister stated that any student enrolled in a public or recognized private university in Cameroon can apply for the Student-Entrepreneur Status. Students at any level and in any field of study can apply, either alone or in a group of up to five students.
The selection is based on the feasibility of the business idea and the qualities of the student. The Yaoundé Congress Hall welcomed different institutes with various opportunities to showcase their diverse skills. Among them was Kaka Martin Mbong of RHIBS institute, the best student, who said, “It is first of all an opportunity because this forum did not choose all institutions in Yaoundé. So, if we were chosen, that means we are up to standard with the requirements. We hope for encouragement from the Minister as he visits our stands. To be eligible, students should have some experience in clubs, associations, or competitions related to business.
A recommendation letter from a company, a training certificate, or proof of computer skills can also help in the selection process, according to the Minister. When asked how beneficial this forum is to the gathered students, the Minister replied, “ The forum establishes a partnership network comprising public organs in charge of employment and the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises, sectorial ministries notably the Ministry of Finance, Economy, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Scientific Research and Innovation, Agriculture, Livestock, and the Ministry of Commerce as well as development partners and funding organizations to help support these growing student entrepreneurs”.
With the support received from partners, Martin Mbong stated that it helps them send their best students of the year abroad for further studies and a brighter future, highlighting this as their best advantage over others institutions. Because of the growing need for jobs after graduation, the Ministry says this forum matters as it helps students gain skills to create their own businesses instead of waiting for employment. It also promotes innovation and supports Cameroon’s economic growth by encouraging young entrepreneurs. According to Prof. Fame Ndongo, the Student-Entrepreneur program is a great opportunity for students to turn their ideas into real businesses. By supporting young innovators, Cameroon is investing in a future where graduates are not just job seekers but also job creators. This initiative will help students gain valuable skills, contribute to the economy, and build a better future for themselves and the country.
