The Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Mounouna Foutsou, met with a UN delegation on September 5, 2025, to discuss two major concerns regarding youth engagement in electoral process.
The gathering which was led by UN group Peace and Development Advisor, Stean Auguste Tshiband, discussed on two main topics, the National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security, and how to get young people involved in the electoral process. A major concern was that many young people do not understand the electoral process. The UN Advisor asked, “How do we get the right information to them, how to we educate them?” To help solve this, a three-day event for the International Day of Peace is planned for September 19 to 21, 2025. The UN wants to bring together 35 to 45 youths from across the country.
The goal is to listen to their aspirations and learn what peace means to them. This will happen alongside education on maintaining peace before, during, and after elections. The event will include panel discussions, but a special hour will be reserved for the young people to share their own messages. On the other topic, Cameroon is a trailblazer in creating its National Action Plan. Achaleke Christian, the African Union Ambassador for Youth, Peace and Security, stated that the plan is being reviewed and will be ready for presentation on September 21. Minister Mounouna Foutsou reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to this work. He scheduled a follow up technical meeting for both teams to fine tune their collective efforts and finalize preparations for the Peace Day celebration.
