In a moment of extraordinary courage, 22 year old Fonyeh Ludmilland rescued a mother and her six month old baby from a speeding motorcycle in Emana, Yaoundé but unfortunately was struck by the motorcycle, and then run over by an oncoming truck, which crushed both his legs.
On a quiet night in Emana, Yaoundé, 22 year old Fonyeh Ludmilland, known as Lulu, was returning home after watching the Champions League final. The streets were calm until a speeding motorcycle suddenly lost control, heading straight toward a mother and her six-month-old baby. Without hesitation, Fonyeh leaped forward, pushing them out of harm. « I saw the motorcycle coming directly at her, and I was trying to save her, but that day, I lost my legs » he said in an online stream.
The impact was brutal. The bike knocked him down, and before he could move, a heavy truck ran over both legs. passerbys rushed him to the hospital, where doctors fought to save him. The injuries were too severe both legs had to be amputated below the knees. Fonyeh woke up to a new reality. The young man who once moved freely now faced life without his feet. His mother, Fon Juliet, stays by his side, doing everything she can to support him.
But the challenges are overwhelming. Simple tasks are now difficult, and returning to his studies seems impossible without help. Artificial legs could give Fonyeh back his independence, but they are expensive. A mobility chair would help him move around, and basic support would allow him to continue his education. « We have done what we could, and what we need now is artificial legs and a wheelchair to help him move around, » his mother explained.
For now, he depends on the kindness of others to survive. Fonyeh act of bravery saved two lives, but it cost him his ability to walk. There have been mixed reactions since this tragic was made public, some say his sacrifice should be appreciated by the government, while others believe he should not have gone so far as to lose both legs. While the loss is already there, Fonyeh’s mother calls on the public to lend a helping hand so that he can at least continue a normal life.
