Observed every 15 August, Assumption Day is a public holiday in Cameroon, particularly cherished by the Roman Catholic community as a day of spiritual rebirth. With the celebration approaching, families have already begun preparations, stocking up on foodstuffs and other essentials for the occasion.
«We start buying now because as the day approaches, we get busy, » says Ketcha Elvira, a parent preparing her child’s rebirth. At the Mvog Atangana Mballa market in Yaoundé, activities are ongoing, with foodstuffs being the key purchases to welcome gatherings that day. White is the dress code for many, symbolizing purification. For the faithful, August 15 represents not just a feast but a personal renewal, a chance to embrace hope, forgiveness, and new beginnings.
Churches overflow with worshippers, while processions and prayers echo the theme of heavenly rebirth. Butum Karel, a Christian, shares « I won’t be baptized that day because I’m already born again, but it is a day of forgiveness that is what we preach”. This ritual is known to Catholics. » Jules Pauline Barga, another believer, adds, “Assumption is for Catholics. We don’t celebrate it, but it’s a good practice, and we all respect that,” emphasizing the importance of tradition and shared valves in the society.
For families preparing children for baptism, the day holds deeper meaning. Ama Brenda, an adult preparing for her baptism, explains, «At first, I thought baptism was just white clothes and a big celebration. But through catechism classes, I have learned it’s about changing how I live, being patient with my family, honest in all things, and forgiving those who hurt me. The feast will come and go, but this promise to God lasts forever ». In the days before August 15th, families and communities are getting ready for a day of celebrations and thinking deeply.
The focus is not just on the outside show, but on the inner promise to forgive, renew, and live by strong values.
