In a significant step towards inclusive youth development, over thirty managers from Cameroon’s Multifunctional Youth Promotion Centers (CMPJ) have completed a specialized workshop on understanding and supporting young people living with disabilities. The workshop was conducted in partnership with the international NGO Sightsavers.
Participants received training on a range of critical topics, including. The concept of disability and understanding different models of it. The rights of persons with disabilities. Identifying barriers to inclusion within the CMPJs. Principles of inclusive pedagogy and adapting activities. Inclusive communication techniques, including an introduction to basic sign language.
In her address, Yvette Eyenga Binam, the Technical Focal Point for the MINJEC-Sightsavers partnership, emphasized that the workshop is part of the broader framework for the socio-economic integration of all youth, with a specific focus on those with disabilities. She stated that the training would enable officials to effectively design, implement, and evaluate inclusive programs and services.
The workshop concluded with a practical exercise where participants were tasked with adapting an existing youth activity plan to be fully accessible for different types of disabilities. This included planning for inclusive accessibility measures, staff training, awareness campaigns, and program adaptations.
