After fleeing her home to escape her stepmother’s mistreatment according to report, 17-year-old Élodie Mvondo Ekotto found shelter at a neighbour’s house, where she was given poisoned chocolate bread by a man who reportedly intended to assault her.
In the Manguier area of Yaoundé, reports indicate that Mvondo Ekotto left the house since one week because of mistreatment from her stepmother while her father, a military officer, was away on a mission. With nowhere to go, the teenager went to the home of a man known as Safira Ramadan. She did not like him, but she needed a place to stay to avoid hunger. Safira Ramadan was known to have romantic intentions toward the adolescent girl, per report.
While she was at his house, Safira Ramadan offered Élodie bread chocolates. Talking to some media, he had put a substance into the bread. He reportedly believed it was a sleeping pill. “arata chop die”. His plan was to make her fall asleep so he could assault her because she did not want an intimate relationship with him.
Instead of falling asleep, Élodie died just minutes after eating the poisoned bread. Safira Ramadan panicked. He moved her body out of his house and called three members of his family to help him. He asked them to help him get rid of the body and to help him escape. However, authorities had already been alerted to the girl’s disappearance by her father.
The police captured Safira Ramadan and the three family members who came to help him get dispose of her body.
